This book, written more than 30 years ago, is frighteningly relevant today, as its analysis and perspectives largely reflect the current situation. At the time, this book sparked a strong socio-political debate.

Global and international, political and societal, economic and social crises are escalating rapidly – and daily bewilderment is growing. In a personal way, author Beate Winkler analyzes and assesses the scale of the crisis, offers possible courses of action, and points to perspectives for politics, society, and the individual citizen. One thing becomes clear: we are in an identity crisis and at a crossroads. It is also up to us whether the crisis can become an opportunity.
In her book “Our Chance: Courage, Action, and Visions in Crisis,” the committed political human rights expert outlines possible paths that equip citizens with the tools to avoid stumbling into dead ends from which there are no escapes. The future requires enlightened, emotionally engaged actors, not paralyzed by helplessness and depression, and committed thinkers. “We cannot change the wind, but we can adjust our sails,” she quotes Aristotle, who—along with others she cites—reads remarkably well in this context.
The author demonstrates that change has already begun in many areas: values, civil society, education, organizations, communication – and, not least, the formulation of a vision for Europe. The author calls for “connecting Europe with ideas that resonate with and convince all European citizens” (p. 136). This is of crucial importance, especially in light of current interreligious and intercultural conflicts.
Finally, Beate Winkler adds further suggestions and motivations for action by posing specific questions to the reader at the end of her publication—a kind of pointed critique designed to initiate processes of change, both personal and politically effective. For further reading and engagement, initiatives, foundations, and organizations are listed, along with recommendations for additional literature.

Following the longing,” at the French Embassy in Vienna on April 9, 2014.
